Testing as part of the Oracle Cloud Applications Lifecycle

Oracle Fusion Cloud Applications receive regular quarterly updates. Customers have the opportunity to embrace the continuous adoption mantra and apply new tools, features and functionality to help them efficiently manage their businesses. This update strategy provides continuous and ongoing access to improvements and enhancements in the underlying cloud-based ERP platform.

However, unless the IT department makes these available in applications and services to the users, the benefits will not be realized. This is why it’s important that dedicated resources can be deployed to manage the updates and communicate the benefits to business users.  Internal collaboration can help organizations decide which features they’d like to deploy in order to give them more agile, usable and flexible applications.

Emerging technologies with intelligent automation are maturing rapidly. Today, a cloud-based ERP system such as Oracle Fusion ERP can provide a complete solution for handling volumes of data, which can be easily updated to accommodate change and maintain competitive advantage. Most of these technologies feature some form of automation, analytics and personalized data; with AI and ML being used to drive insight and innovation.  Agile organizations are using these emerging technologies not just as add-ons, or to improve functionality, but for mission-critical tasks.

With each update, however, there is a risk that errors may be introduced, or that business workflows may need to be amended to accommodate changes to the software. In light of the recurring nature of updates, and the effort required to test and deploy them, businesses are constantly seeking ways to de-risk the process and reduce the time to value for any ERP software updates. The key to process improvement is automation. Given that the functional testing of software updates can account for more than half the overall project timeline, it makes sense that automating the testing elements of a project can yield significant cost and time savings. Testing an update needs to be planned and executed to perfection, as the testing window may only be available for 2 or 3 weeks during  the quarterly Oracle Cloud Applications Lifecycle.

The time and effort associated with functional or regression testing is frequently underestimated. Adopting a process-driven approach to test planning, script building, editing, execution and documentation can yield significant long-term benefits. This starts by knowing exactly what to test. After all, testing something that doesn’t need testing is a waste of time and resource. Over time, as you build up a catalog of test scripts, all subsequent test runs can be executed quickly and consistently. Automating the execution process eliminates the risk of human error, is effortlessly repeatable and can be run without the need for specialist test engineers or programmers.

Who wouldn’t want to save time, money and effort; accelerate time to value for new updates, reduce the risk of errors and improve the quality and repeatability of their testing?
